Red-White Ball Valve Series Comparison

Red-White Ball Valve Series Comparison — Which 50xx Valve You Need

Red-White makes dozens of ball valve series and the differences matter: DZR versus standard brass, press versus threaded, 600 psi versus 250 psi classes. This comparison lays out the stocked series side by side so you order the right valve the first time.

DZR vs Standard Lead-Free Brass

The 5044AB uses DZR (dezincification-resistant) brass; the 5544AB and 5592AB use standard lead-free brass. Both are NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 certified for potable water and both carry the same 150 WSP / 600 WOG class on threaded ends. The difference shows up over time in aggressive water: standard brass can lose zinc (dezincification) in hard or chlorinated water, weakening the body at the threads. DZR alloy is formulated against exactly that. In known aggressive-water regions, spec the 50xx DZR series and stop thinking about it.

Press vs Threaded vs PEX

  • 5020AB EzPress — full port DZR press valve for copper press systems: 600 psi from 15°F to 160°F, 150 psi at 366°F. Use with the press tool already on the truck; no threads, no sealant, no hot work.
  • 5520AB EzPress — same press convenience at a lower pressure class: 250 psi from 15°F to 160°F, 150 psi at 250°F. Fine for most commercial hydronic and plumbing pressure classes; check your design pressure before choosing it over the 5020AB.
  • 5015AB PEX — DZR ball valve with ASTM F1960 PEX ends: 300 psi from 15°F to 160°F, 150 psi at 200°F. The PEX companion to the 5044AB.
  • 5014AB — one side PEX F1960, one side EzPress, for PEX-to-press transitions.
  • 5044AB threaded — universal: 600 psi from 15°F to 160°F, 150 psi at 366°F, FNPT ends to ASME B1.20.1.

Common Features Across the Ball Valve Line

Full port flow, chrome-plated brass balls, virgin PTFE seats, and blow-out proof stems recur across the threaded and press series. The 5044AB line also carries MSS SP-110 compliance, and the series certifications include CSA (ANSI Z21.15/CSA 9.1) and UL listings depending on the model. Verify the certification block on each product page — it is taken from the factory spec sheet for that exact series.

Choosing in 30 Seconds

  • Threaded pipe → 5044AB (DZR) or 5544AB / 5592AB (lead-free brass).
  • Copper press system → 5020AB (600 psi class) or 5520AB (250 psi class).
  • PEX system → 5015AB, or 5014AB for a press transition.
  • Tight space → 5081AB / 5082AB mini valves, same 600 WOG class.
  • Diverting or mixing → 5045 3-way.
  • Large flanged mains → 5800L cast iron, 2" through 8".
  • Fuel gas → CSA-certified 5100 / 5200 series — never a water valve on gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 5044AB or 5544AB — is the DZR upgrade worth it? On aggressive water, yes without discussion. On standard commercial water, both serve for decades; the DZR series is the insurance policy against dezincification in known problem regions.
  • Can I press a 5020AB with any press tool? EzPress connections work with compatible press jaws for the size — use the correct jaw and complete the press cycle fully. A partial press can hold a hydro test and fail later.
  • Which series for a water heater shutoff? Threaded 5544AB/5044AB on rigid pipe, or a tankless kit on tankless installs — the kits add the drain/purge ports that make flushing routine.
  • What about gas service? Only the CSA-certified gas series (5100/5200). Never a water ball valve on fuel gas — see gas ball valves.
  • Mini valves for main isolation? 5081AB/5082AB minis are full 600 WOG class but sized for tight spaces and small lines. Use the full-size 5044AB where handle size and visibility matter.
