Engineering Calculators

Contractor-ready tools built on verified engineering formulas. All inputs and outputs are labeled with units and assumptions.

📐 Live Tool
Pipe Sizing Calculator
Calculates minimum nominal pipe size based on flow rate and target velocity. Separate inputs for water, steam, natural gas, and oil. Uses standard fluid mechanics relationships — not simplified rules of thumb.
Open Full Calculator
💨 Live Tool
Pressure Drop Calculator
Estimates friction pressure loss through straight pipe runs using the Hazen-Williams equation for water. Input pipe size, length, flow rate, and C-factor. Useful for pump sizing and system troubleshooting.
🔧 Live Tool
Valve Cv Calculator
Calculate required flow coefficient (Cv) for valve selection. Cv represents the GPM of water that passes through a valve with 1 PSI pressure drop. Supports liquid and gas service using ISA-75 standard relationships.
💧 Live Tool
Flow Rate Calculator
Convert between GPM, pipe velocity, and inside diameter. Solve for any one variable given the other two. Based on Q = A × V (continuity equation). Useful for verifying sizing and comparing schedules.
Live Tool
Pump Horsepower Calculator
Calculate water horsepower (WHP) and brake horsepower (BHP) for pump selection. Uses standard hydraulic power formula: WHP = (GPM × TDH × SG) ÷ 3960. BHP accounts for pump efficiency.

Selection Guides

Written for working contractors and maintenance buyers. No fluff — just the right product for the right application.

🧵
Thread Sealant Guide
Match the right tape or pipe dope to your fluid, pressure, and temperature. Wrong sealant = leaks and code violations.
Application Fluid Correct Product Notes
Gas lines Natural gas, LP Yellow PTFE or gas-rated dope White tape NOT approved for gas
Potable water Cold & hot water White PTFE or NSF-61 dope Must be NSF/ANSI 61 certified
Steam Steam ≤ 250°F High-temp pipe dope PTFE not recommended above 212°F
Hydraulic Oil, hydraulic fluid Anaerobic sealant PTFE can shred & contaminate
Air Compressed air White PTFE tape 2–3 wraps, clockwise
🔧
Valve Selection Guide
Different valves are built for different jobs. Using the wrong valve type causes poor flow control and premature failure.
Valve Type Best For Typical Use
Ball Valve On/Off isolation General plumbing, gas, water service
Gate Valve Full open/close, infrequent Main shutoffs, older systems
Globe Valve Throttling/flow regulation Steam, boiler feed, flow control
Check Valve Backflow prevention Pumps, water heaters, boosters
Butterfly Valve Large diameter HVAC, fire suppression, mains

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from plumbing contractors, MRO buyers, and industrial maintenance teams.

Size based on flow rate and target velocity — typically 2–8 ft/sec for water. Higher velocity causes erosion and pressure loss. Use our Pipe Sizing Calculator for an engineered recommendation.
Steam is compressible — its volume changes with pressure and temperature. Sizing accounts for pressure drop per 100 ft of run and steam velocity (typically 50–150 ft/sec). Condensate return lines require completely separate sizing. Never apply water rules to steam systems.
The rating is a pressure class, not a direct PSI number. A 150# carbon steel flange handles ~285 PSI at 100°F; 300# handles ~740 PSI. They are NOT interchangeable — OD and bolt holes differ. See the Flange Dimensions table.
Schedule 40 (STD) covers most residential and light commercial water and gas applications. Schedule 80 (XH) is used for higher pressure, industrial, or chemical service. See our Pipe Dimension Chart to compare wall thickness across all schedules.
Yes. Submit your list via our Quote Request page or call (615) 219-9103. We respond same business day and can work from a material takeoff, PO, or part number list.
Gas lines require yellow PTFE tape or gas-rated dope — white tape is not code approved for gas. Potable water needs NSF-61 certified products. Steam requires high-temp dope (not PTFE above 212°F). See the full Thread Sealant Guide.
Cv is the flow coefficient — the GPM of water that passes through a fully open valve with exactly 1 PSI pressure drop. Use our Valve Cv Calculator to determine the minimum required Cv, then select a valve with a rated Cv at or above that value.
