Ball Valves — Commercial & Industrial Isolation Valves

Ball valves are the workhorse shutoff valve of commercial plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping. PVFPro stocks threaded, press, PEX, flanged, and mini ball valves from Red-White, Legend, and Apollo — brass, bronze, stainless steel, and carbon steel — with fast shipping from multiple U.S. warehouses.

What Is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a quarter-turn shutoff valve: a drilled ball rotates inside the valve body, and a 90-degree turn of the handle either aligns the bore with the pipe for full flow or seats the ball against the port to stop it. Ball valves are the standard isolation valve in commercial plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping because they open and close fast, seal tight over years of cycling, and offer low pressure drop when open. PVFPro stocks ball valves from Red-White Valve, Legend Valve, and Apollo — threaded, press, PEX, flanged, and mini configurations in brass, bronze, stainless steel, carbon steel, and PP-R.

Full Port vs Standard Port

A full port ball valve has a bore the same size as the pipe, so flow is essentially unrestricted — what contractors want on supply lines and equipment isolation. A standard port valve has a slightly reduced bore, which trades a small pressure drop for a more compact, economical body. For most branch and equipment shutoff work, standard port is fine; for main lines, pump suction, and anything sensitive to pressure drop, spec full port. Both types are stocked across the size range on PVFPro.

Applications

  • Commercial plumbing and potable water isolation — lead-free certified valves for code compliance
  • HVAC and hydronic mechanical rooms — shutoff at coils, pumps, and equipment
  • Equipment and instrumentation isolation on process and industrial piping
  • Gas piping systems — see our CSA-certified gas ball valve selection
  • PEX and press-fit installations with compatible end connections
  • Primary/secondary piping and isolation for future service on every major component

How to Choose the Right Ball Valve

  • Match the end connection to the system. Threaded FNPT for threaded pipe, press ends for copper press systems, PEX ends for PEX tubing, flanged or welded ends for larger commercial and industrial lines.
  • Match the material to the service. Brass and lead-free brass for potable water; bronze for steam and heavy service; stainless steel for corrosive and high-purity media; carbon steel for industrial; PP-R for plastic piping systems.
  • Check the pressure class. Threaded brass ball valves typically carry working pressures in the 400 to 600 psi WOG range by series; verify the rating on the product page against your system pressure and temperature.
  • Pick full port where flow matters. Full port for mains and low pressure drop applications; standard port for compact branch shutoff.
  • Verify lead-free certification for potable work. Look for NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 listings on the product page.

Technical Specifications Overview

  • Operation: Quarter-turn, lever handle standard on most series.
  • Connections stocked: FNPT threaded, press-fit, PEX, flanged, and solder ends depending on series.
  • Materials stocked: Lead-free and DZR brass, bronze, stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron (flanged), and PP-R.
  • Ratings: WOG (water-oil-gas) and WSP (working steam pressure) classes vary by series — each product page lists its own rating block.
  • Common standards: NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1; lead-free series certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and 372; many series comply with MSS SP-110. Confirm the certification block on each product page.
  • Brands stocked: Red-White Valve Corp., Legend Valve, and Apollo.

Installation and Service Notes

Threaded valves seal on properly applied pipe sealant or tape against NPT threads — wrap male threads in the direction of tightening and keep sealant off the first thread to avoid debris in the flow path. Press and PEX valves go on with the same tools and connections as the rest of the system. Leave handle clearance so a quarter-turn is possible after insulation is installed. For valves that sit open for years, cycle them during routine service visits so the ball and seats do not set up. If a stem weeps at the packing, many series allow a packing adjustment before replacement is needed. And never bury a ball valve behind finished walls without an access panel — the fastest valve to operate is useless if nobody can reach it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can a ball valve be used for throttling? Ball valves are designed for open-or-closed service. Partial positions can seat wear against the flow; for throttling, use a globe valve, balancing valve, or characterized control valve instead.
  • What does WOG mean? Water-Oil-Gas — the non-steam working pressure rating. WSP is the steam working pressure rating, always lower. Match the rating that fits your media and temperature.
  • Full port or standard port for water heaters? Either works for the shutoff itself; many contractors use full port so the valve never restricts flow or complicates flushing.
  • Are these lead-free for potable water? The lead-free series on PVFPro carry NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 certification. Check the certification block on the specific product page before specifying.
  • Do you stock press-fit ball valves? Yes — press-end ball valves are stocked for copper press systems, alongside threaded, PEX, and flanged configurations.
