High Demand Item – Frequently Reordered by Contractors

The Fernco 1056RC Strong Back is the shielded, heavy-duty version of the standard 1056 coupling — built for underground connections that have to stand up to heavy earth loads and shear. A .012″ stainless steel shear ring wraps the elastomeric PVC sleeve and a molded-in bushing keeps the two pipes rigidly aligned, so the joint holds its shape instead of flexing under load.

It connects cast iron, plastic, and steel in the same or different sizes, with no primers or glue. The clamp housing and band are 301 stainless steel with 305 stainless screws. Spec the standard 1056 for everyday DWV work; spec the 1056RC when the joint is buried, carries load, or needs the extra alignment the steel shield provides. Stocked 1-1/2″ through 15″.

Applications

  • Underground sewer and drain connections under heavy earth loads
  • Joints that must resist shear forces and hold pipe alignment
  • Transitioning cast iron, plastic, or steel of the same or different sizes
  • Repairs and tie-ins where a standard band coupling isn’t rigid enough
  • DWV, sewer, and drain work that needs added strength and support

Key Features

  • .012″ thick 300-series stainless steel shear ring
  • Molded-in bushing for improved pipe alignment
  • Elastomeric PVC sleeve — Shore A 65, leak-proof, chemical and sewer-gas resistant
  • 301 stainless clamp housing and band; 305 stainless clamp screw
  • Connects same or different pipe sizes and materials
  • Made in the USA — sizes 15″ and below are AIS and BABA compliant

Best Used For

  • Buried sewer and drain joints under heavy backfill or traffic load
  • Connections that need to resist shear and stay aligned
  • Material and size transitions where the standard 1056 needs reinforcing
  • Permanent underground repairs built to last the life of the line

FAQ

How is this different from the standard 1056?

The 1056RC adds a .012″ stainless steel shear ring and molded-in bushing over the same PVC sleeve. That shield resists heavy earth loads and shear and keeps the joint rigid — the standard 1056 is an unshielded band coupling for lighter-duty work.

What pipe materials does it connect?

Cast iron, plastic, and steel, in the same or different sizes. Reducing sizes are listed large × small (for example, 6″ x 4″).

Is it rated for underground use?

Yes — it’s engineered for demanding underground applications and conforms to ASTM C1173 and CSA B602, with ICC ES PMG and UPC listings.

How do I install it?

Slip it over the pipe ends and torque the stainless clamps to 60 in-lbs with a nut driver or torque wrench. No primer, glue, or cure time.

Why Contractors Choose This

  • Steel shield means fewer callbacks on buried, load-bearing joints
  • Holds alignment where a plain band coupling would sag or shear
  • One fitting transitions material and size at the same time
  • Code-listed: ASTM C1173, CSA B602, ICC ES PMG, UPC
