High Demand Item – Frequently Reordered by Contractors
The Fernco 1056 is the workhorse flexible coupling for DWV, sewer, and drain work — the part most contractors just call “a Fernco.” It joins two pipes of the same or different material and outside diameter with a watertight, no-hub connection, with no primers, glue, or solvent odors.
The sleeve is molded from elastomeric PVC that resists chemicals, UV, fungus growth, and normal sewer gases, and the band is locked down with two 300-series stainless steel worm-gear clamps that won’t rust. One coupling connects cast iron, plastic (PVC, ABS, CPVC, smooth-wall HDPE), copper, steel, or lead. Stocked 3/4″ through 24″ in straight and reducing sizes.
Applications
- Drain, waste & vent (DWV) connections and repairs
- Sewer and drain lines, above or below ground
- Joining dissimilar pipe materials — cast iron to plastic, plastic to steel, and so on
- Connecting same or different outside diameters with straight and reducing couplings
- Fast no-hub tie-ins without primers, glue, or solvent cement
Key Features
- Elastomeric PVC sleeve — leak-proof, root-proof, resistant to chemicals, UV, fungus and sewer gases
- Two 300-series stainless steel clamps, corrosion resistant and rustproof
- Connects same or different pipe sizes and materials
- Each coupling marked with part number, size, and compatible pipe materials
- Made in the USA — sizes 15″ and below are AIS and BABA compliant

Best Used For
- Repairing or extending cast iron and plastic DWV lines
- Transitioning between two different pipe materials
- Reducing between two pipe sizes with a single fitting
- Any sewer, drain, waste or vent connection that needs a fast, code-compliant seal
FAQ
What pipe materials does it connect?
Cast iron, plastic (PVC, ABS, CPVC, smooth-wall HDPE), copper, steel, and lead — in any combination, same or different sizes.
Can it go underground?
Yes. The 1056 is rated for above- and below-ground DWV, sewer, and drain use and conforms to ASTM C1173, ASTM D5926, and CSA B602.
Standard vs. Strong Back RC — which do I need?
The standard 1056 uses two stainless clamps over a PVC sleeve. If the joint sees heavy earth loads or shear and needs to stay rigid, step up to the Strong Back RC version, which adds a stainless steel shear shield.
How do I size a reducing coupling?
Reducing sizes are listed as large × small (for example, 6″ x 4″). Match each end to your pipe’s nominal size from the table above.
