High Demand Item – Frequently Reordered by Contractors

The Fernco 1002RC Strong Back is the shielded, heavy-duty clay adapter — built to transition vitrified clay sewer pipe to cast iron or plastic on buried joints that face heavy earth loads and shear. A .012″ stainless steel shear ring and molded-in bushing wrap the stepped PVC sleeve to hold the connection rigid and aligned.

Clamp housing and band are 301 stainless steel with 305 stainless screws. Spec the standard 1002 for everyday clay tie-ins; spec the 1002RC when the joint is buried, carries load, or needs the alignment the steel shield provides. Sizes listed clay side × CI/plastic side, 4″ through 15″.

Applications

  • Underground clay-to-CI/plastic sewer transitions under heavy load
  • Joints that must resist shear and hold alignment
  • Clay sewer main and lateral repairs needing extra strength
  • Transitions where a standard clay adapter isn’t rigid enough

Key Features

  • .012″ thick 300-series stainless steel shear ring
  • Molded-in bushing for improved pipe alignment
  • Stepped elastomeric PVC sleeve sized for clay OD
  • 301 stainless clamp housing and band; 305 stainless screw
  • Made in the USA — sizes 15″ and below are AIS and BABA compliant

Best Used For

  • Buried clay-to-CI/plastic joints under backfill or traffic load
  • Sewer transitions that must resist shear and stay aligned
  • Clay main repairs where the standard 1002 needs reinforcing
  • Permanent underground transitions built to last

FAQ

How is this different from the standard 1002?

The 1002RC adds a .012″ stainless steel shear ring and molded-in bushing over the same clay-adapter sleeve, for resistance to heavy earth loads and shear. The standard 1002 is an unshielded clay adapter for lighter-duty work.

How are sizes listed?

Clay side first, CI/plastic side second (for example, 6″ Clay × 4″).

Is it rated for underground use?

Yes — engineered for demanding underground applications, conforming to ASTM C1173 and CSA B602 with ICC ES PMG and UPC listings.

Why Contractors Choose This

  • Steel shield means fewer callbacks on buried clay joints
  • Holds alignment where a plain clay adapter would shift
  • Transitions clay to modern pipe in one fitting
  • Code-listed: ASTM C1173, CSA B602, ICC ES PMG, UPC
  • Made in the USA

.012″ 300-series stainless steel shear ring
301 stainless housing & band, 305 stainless screws
ASTM C1173, CSA B602, ICC ES PMG & UPC listed
Made in the USA (15″ and below AIS/BABA compliant)
