Red-White Valve Selection Guide

Red-White Valve Selection Guide — Which Valve for Which Job

Ball, gate, globe, check, butterfly, balancing, strainer — every valve type has a job it is built for. This selection guide matches Red-White series to the duty: isolation, throttling, reverse-flow protection, balancing, and more.

Start With the Job, Not the Valve

Most valve selection mistakes are category mistakes: a throttling job given a gate valve, a gas line given a water valve, a hydronic loop given a globe where a balancing valve belongs. Start with the duty — isolate, prevent reverse flow, balance, drain, or protect — and the category picks itself. This guide matches Red-White valve types to the jobs they are built for.

Isolation: Ball Valve

Quarter-turn shutoff at equipment, branches, and fixtures. Red-White threaded series (5044AB, 5544AB, 5592AB) run 150 WSP / 600 WOG; press and PEX versions cover copper press and PEX systems; 5800L cast iron flanged valves cover large mains. Ball valves isolate — they do not throttle. Shop ball valves.

Main Shutoff and Full-Bore Isolation: Gate Valve

Slow, full-bore multi-turn isolation where pressure drop matters and the valve mostly lives open. Lead-free brass 206AB runs 125 WSP / 200 WOG with graphite packing. Choose a ball valve when speed matters, a gate when bore and slow closure matter. Shop gate valves.

Throttling and Flow Regulation: Globe Valve

When flow has to be adjusted — not just stopped — the globe valve is the seat-and-disc tool for the job. Red-White 210/211 bronze threaded globes run 100 WSP / 150 WOG. For hydronic circuits, pair throttling duty with a balancing valve that locks the setting.

Reverse Flow Protection: Check Valve

  • Swing check (236AB / 237AB) — gravity closure for horizontal lines: 236AB at 300 psi / 125 psi class, bronze 238 Y-type at 150 WSP / 300 WOG.
  • In-line spring check (232AB) — fast, any-orientation closure: 400 psi from 15°F to 200°F.
  • Press in-line check (234AB) — EzPress ends, EPDM seat, for press systems.
  • Dual plate — compact wafer bodies for larger lines.

Pick by line orientation and closing speed, then check the pressure class on the check valve product page.

Hydronic Flow Balancing

  • Fixed-orifice with memory stop (9517/9519) — set-and-lock manual balancing, positive shutoff.
  • PICV (9707/9907) — pressure-independent control with isolation ball valve and union nut.
  • Thermostatic (9960AB) — temperature-governed balancing from 100°F to 150°F settings, double-union body, EzPress/PEX options.
  • Automatic (9957W) — self-adjusting ductile iron balancing.
  • Flanged iron (9574P) — large commercial loops, cast iron with memory stop.

Large-Line Isolation: Butterfly Valve

Ductile iron wafer and lug bodies (937 series) with EPDM or NBR seats and aluminum bronze, ductile iron, or 316 stainless discs — lever, gear, or actuated. MSS SP-67 compliant. Shop butterfly valves.

Equipment Protection: Strainer

A Y-strainer upstream of every control valve, PRV, meter, and pump: 380AB lead-free brass (150 WSP / 400 WOG), 381 flanged iron, 889 stainless (200 WSP/WOG, 350°F max), and 92SS DZR combination strainer-ball valves with union ends. Shop strainers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Ball or gate for the main shutoff? Ball valve — faster, tighter, smaller. Gate valves keep their place where full bore and slow closure matter.
  • Check valve or backflow preventer? Different jobs. Checks stop reverse flow mechanically; code-mandated backflow protection requires listed assemblies. Ask us for the backflow line.
  • Balancing valve or PICV? Fixed-orifice for set-and-lock manual balancing; PICV where system loads vary and the valve must compensate.
  • Which valve never to throttle? Gate and ball valves. Throttling duty goes to globes and balancing valves.
