Carbon Steel Press Piping System — Apollo PowerPress Complete Guide

Carbon Steel Press Piping System — Apollo PowerPress®

Apollo PowerPress® is a carbon steel press piping system designed for commercial HVAC, chilled water, hot water, compressed air, and fire suppression applications where carbon steel pipe is specified. Like copper press, PowerPress eliminates welding, threading, and hot work — using a press tool to create permanent mechanical connections on Schedule 10 and Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe. PVFPro stocks PowerPress fittings and the 89FV Series press ball valves.

What Is PowerPress?

PowerPress uses carbon steel press fittings with an integrated EPDM, HNBR, or FKM O-ring seat that is crimped onto Schedule 10 or Schedule 40 black steel or galvanized pipe using an M-profile press tool. The result is a permanent, weld-quality joint in seconds. No welding certification, no threading machine, no hot work permit required. A patented yellow indicator ring on each fitting provides a visual pre-press indicator — the ring remains visible until the connection is properly pressed.

System Components

  • PowerPress Couplings, Elbows, Tees — Full fitting range for Schedule 10/40 carbon steel pipe. 1/2"–2".
  • PowerPress Reducers, Caps, Adapters — Transition and termination fittings including MxF NPT adapters.
  • Apollo 89FV Series Ball Valve — Carbon steel 3-piece ball valve with PowerPress ends. The standard isolation valve for PowerPress systems. EPDM, HNBR, and FKM seal options for different media. 1/2"–2".
  • Seal Options — EPDM (yellow ring) for water, HNBR (black ring) for gas, FKM (orange ring) for oil and aggressive media.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pipe schedule does PowerPress work with?

PowerPress is designed for Schedule 10 and Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe per ASTM A135, A53, and A795. Verify that your specific fitting series is rated for the pipe wall thickness you're using.

What do the different ring colors mean?

The indicator ring color indicates the O-ring seal material: yellow = EPDM (water service), black = HNBR (gas service), orange = FKM (oil and aggressive media). Select the correct seal material for your service fluid.

Can PowerPress be used for gas?

PowerPress with HNBR (black ring) seals is listed for gas service in applicable configurations. Verify the specific model's gas listing before installation and confirm with your local AHJ.
