Carbon Steel Grooved Piping System — VSH Shurjoint
The carbon steel grooved piping system is the dominant connection method for large-diameter HVAC, fire protection, and industrial piping systems. VSH Shurjoint grooved fittings and couplings — part of the Aalberts Integrated Piping Systems family — provide fast, reliable, and fully serviceable grooved connections in ductile iron, stainless steel, and copper alloy. PVFPro stocks A/B moving Shurjoint SKUs; all items are factory order.
How Grooved Systems Work
A groove is cut or roll-formed into the pipe end using a grooving machine. A mechanical coupling with two housing segments and a gasket locks onto the groove on both pipe ends, clamping them together in a rigid or flexible joint. The coupling bolt torque is specified by the manufacturer and must be verified during installation. No welding, no threading, no hot work required above the grooving machine operation itself.
System Components
- Rigid Couplings — For systems where pipe movement must be restrained. Standard for most HVAC and industrial applications.
- Flexible Couplings — Allow angular deflection and pipe movement. Used at equipment connections and expansion joints to absorb vibration and thermal movement.
- Ductile Iron Fittings — 90° and 45° elbows, equal and reducing tees, reducers, crosses, end caps, and flanges. Epoxy coated, galvanized, or painted finish options.
- Stainless Steel Grooved Fittings — For corrosive service, food processing, pharmaceutical, and marine applications requiring 304 or 316 SS.
- Gaskets — EPDM (water, HVAC), Nitrile (oil, gas), Silicone (high-temperature), and Flush seal options. Gasket selection is critical — must match service fluid.
- Plain-End Couplings — For joining plain-end (un-grooved) pipe without grooving equipment. Useful for repairs and transitions.

Where Grooved Systems Are Used
- Fire protection — Grooved is the dominant method for fire sprinkler mains 2" and above under NFPA 13
- HVAC — Chilled water, hot water, condenser water mains in commercial mechanical rooms
- Industrial process piping — Chemical plants, refineries, power generation, mining
- Commercial plumbing — Large-diameter domestic water mains in high-rise buildings
- Marine and offshore — Where vibration accommodation and serviceability are required
- District energy — Chilled and hot water distribution systems
Cut Groove vs Roll Groove
Roll groove — A roll-forming tool cold-forms the groove into the pipe wall without removing material. Faster than cut grooving and the preferred method for Schedule 10 and lighter wall pipe. Most common on HVAC and light commercial applications.
Cut groove — A cutting tool removes material to create the groove. Required on Schedule 40 and heavier pipe where roll grooving would reduce wall thickness below code minimums. Standard on Schedule 40 fire protection pipe and heavy industrial pipe.
Code & Certification
- NFPA 13 listed for fire sprinkler systems in applicable configurations
- UL and FM listed couplings and fittings for fire protection service
- AWWA C606 standard groove dimensions — compatible with standard grooved coupling brands
- NSF/ANSI 61 certified gaskets available for potable water service
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Shurjoint fittings interchangeable with other grooved brands?
Yes. Shurjoint grooved fittings conform to AWWA C606 standard groove dimensions and are compatible with major grooved coupling brands. Verify gasket seat dimensions for critical applications.
